Say Cheese⦠Without Saying It: 5 Ways to Get Natural, Authentic Photos.
Ditch the Awkward Smiles and Capture the Real You
Weāve all heard it: āSay cheese!ā Itās the classic cue to flash a smile in front of the camera.
But letās be real, how often does that result in a stiff, awkward grin that looks nothing like you?
If youāve ever looked at a photo and thought, āThat just doesnāt feel like me,ā youāre not alone. Great photos arenāt about forced poses or perfect smiles, they're about real moments and true connection.
Iām Michele, a portrait photographer with over 20 years of experience capturing genuine moments that reflect the beauty of who you are whether thatās for your brand, your family, or a big life milestone.
Today, Iām sharing five of my favorite tips for capturing natural, cheese-free photos with no awkward grins required.
1. Let the Moment Lead
The best photos often happen when no oneās even paying attention. A spontaneous laugh. A quiet pause. A thoughtful glance. These little, unscripted moments are the ones that tell the story.
Tip: Keep your camera ready and your eyes open. Donāt wait for a āperfectā pose wait for a perfect feeling. And when in doubt, take the picture. You can always delete later.
2. Donāt pose PLAY!
Yes, I can direct you and guide your poses. But sometimes, the magic happens when you move. I might ask you to sway from side to side, twirl, or even dance a little. This works for kids, teens, and grown-ups alike.
TIP: To loosen things up, I often ask playful questions like:
āWhatās the best thing that happened to you this week?ā
The smile that follows? Pure gold.
3. Make Comfort the Priority
People shine when they feel at ease. Whether Iām photographing a toddler, a couple, or a CEO, the key is making sure they feel comfortable enough to be themselves. Thatās when the real, joyful, beautiful expressions come through.
TIP: Candid always beats polished.
4. Chase the Light, Not Perfection
Photography is nothing without light, but it doesnāt have to be āperfectā light. The golden glow of early evening, soft overcast skies, strong shadows on a sunny day, all of it can be beautiful. You donāt need a studio. You just need to see the light and let it lead.
TIP: If I am not sure, I hold my phone camera up in selfie mode (my fav), and turn in a circle. You can see how the light changes by looking at your face. In direct sunlight, the light will be harsher, but the colors will be bright. If the light is behind you, backlight, it will be diffused, and the colors will be muted.
5. Celebrate the Real Stuff
Messy hair. Laughing fits. Someone is blinking mid-laugh. These arenāt outtakes, theyāre real life. And thatās exactly what makes them powerful. Let go of the idea of perfection. Embrace whatās true, whatās honest, and whatās you.
TIP: Donāt be afraid of a blurry image. I used to be, but now embrace them. You might get that crooked smile, or for me, an eye roll from a teenager
Natural Photography Is About Connection
Natural photography isnāt about posing, it is just about being present. Itās about helping people forget thereās even a camera there and allowing real connection to shine through.
So letās toss out the āSay cheese!ā and focus on what matters, connection, laughter, love, and most importantly FUN! Moments that reflect your real life!
